Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took a selfie with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the COP28 climate summit in Dubai. Ms Meloni, who visited Delhi in September for the G20 summit, shared the selfie with the caption “Good friends at COP28. #Melodi.”
PM Modi also met several other world leaders during the summit, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Turkey President RT Erdogan, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu.
During the summit, PM Modi addressed four sessions and discussed ways to promote clean and green growth. He also engaged in discussions about bilateral and regional interests with many leaders on the sidelines of the summit, according to Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra.
Global climate negotiations have recently focused on moving away from fossil fuels, with renewed momentum and ambitious pledges for cleaner energy. PM Modi emphasized the need for all nations to work together to drastically cut global emissions and announced a “green credit” initiative aimed at creating carbon sinks with people’s participation during his COP28 speech.
PM Modi also highlighted India’s efforts to achieve its climate goals, stating that India’s emissions are relatively low considering its population. He urged every nation to sincerely work towards meeting their climate action targets and emphasized the urgency of addressing past mistakes in tackling climate change.
