Dozens of US states have filed a suit against Meta

New Delhi:
Dozens of US states today filed a lawsuit accusing Facebook and Instagram owner Meta of profiting “from children’s pain,” damaging their mental health and misleading the public over the safety of its platforms. Over 40 states are suing Meta.

Here’s your 5-point cheatsheet on the Meta suit

  1. The suit filed in a federal court in California accuses Meta of repeatedly misleading the public about the “substantial dangers of its social media platforms” in seeking to maximize its financial gains.

  2. The legal filing alleged Meta has exploited young users by creating a business model designed to maximize the time they spend on the platform despite harm to their health.

  3. Children and teenagers are suffering from record levels of poor mental health and social media companies like Meta are to blame, New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement announcing the suit.

  4. The suit goes on to accuse Meta of misleading the public about the safety of its platforms, including a Horizon World virtual reality offering that is part of the tech titan’s vision of the metaverse.

  5. The complaints also include against “addictive” features of Meta’s platforms that allegedly use algorithms “designed for toxic content” and push children towards consuming them.
