The member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Mustafa Barghouti, has claimed that Israel is engaging in ethnic cleansing of innocent civilians in Gaza. According to Mr. Barghouti, over 1,700 children have been killed, and there could still be thousands of people trapped in the rubble. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, he made these allegations.
Mr. Barghouti leveled a serious accusation against Israel, stating, “The siege on Gaza is not on Hamas, but on Palestinians. It is an attempt to dehumanize Palestinians and create a climate of hatred against them, similar to what was witnessed in the US where a six-year-old child was killed.”
Regarding US support for Israel, Mr. Barghouti expressed concern that the US President is advocating for Israel’s demands, including allowing Palestinians in Gaza to flee to Egypt. He described this as “dangerous” and warned that it could lead to the “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians, resulting in a catastrophic situation for the people of Gaza.
The Palestinian leader drew parallels between Israel’s current demands and the “first catastrophe” Palestinians faced in 1948 when over 900,000 Palestinians were ethnically expelled. He emphasized that complying with Israel’s demands now would result in an even greater tragedy.
As the conflict escalates, US President Joe Biden is set to visit Israel tomorrow. Mr. Barghouti called on President Biden to prevent such a “crime” from taking place. He urged the President to reject any proposition of resettling refugees in Jordan or Egypt and instead focus on facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza and ending Israeli airstrikes.
Mr. Barghouti also pointed out the contradictory actions of the US, supplying weapons and aid to Ukraine in its conflict against Russian occupation while simultaneously supporting Israel’s demands in the ongoing crisis.
In regard to the current situation in Gaza, Mr. Barghouti highlighted the suffering of the Gazan people. He accused Israel of subjecting them to a “horrible war crime” by denying them access to food, water, and basic necessities such as medicine and electricity. He warned that this could lead to the deaths of many Palestinians, particularly those in hospitals, and create a significant threat of an epidemic outbreak in Gaza.
