Biden Seeks to Reestablish US-China Military Relations Through Meeting With Xi Jinping

US President Joe Biden stated that his objective in the talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping is to restore normal communication between the two superpowers, including military contacts.

Biden expressed his desire to improve the strained relationship with China and reestablish military-to-military connections during his upcoming meeting with Xi in the San Francisco area.

The meeting, scheduled to take place at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, marks only the second in-person meeting between the two leaders since Biden assumed office in January 2021.

When asked about the parameters for success in the summit talks, Biden emphasized the importance of returning to a normal course of communication, especially in times of crisis, and ensuring ongoing military engagement.

Biden also highlighted the potential benefits of job creation for the citizens of China but underscored the need to address concerns related to trade secrets and investments in the country.

The initiative to restore military contacts stems from China’s decision to sever ties with the US following a visit by then-House of Representative Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in August 2022. Reestablishing these contacts is a priority for the US to avoid misunderstandings between the two militaries.

The bilateral relationship faced tensions after the US shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon in February, leading to a frosty period in US-China relations. However, senior Biden administration officials have worked towards rebuilding communication and trust, including visits to Beijing and meetings with their Chinese counterparts.
