England batter Joe Root has chosen not to participate in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, as confirmed by his team, Rajasthan Royals, on Saturday. Root, a prominent international cricketer for England, joined the IPL last season after being picked by the Royals at the 2023 mini-auction. However, he has decided to withdraw from the upcoming IPL event, having played just 3 matches in the 2023 edition and scored 10 runs in a single inning.
Kumar Sangakkara, Royals’ Director of Cricket, expressed respect for Root’s decision and acknowledged his positive impact on the franchise and its players. He mentioned that Root’s energy and experience will be missed and wished him success in his future endeavors.

Root’s presence in the Royals squad provided valuable depth and experience, particularly benefiting younger players such as Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. His rapport with fellow England teammate Jos Buttler and his bond with Yuzvendra Chahal were notable highlights during his time with the franchise.
Last season, RR finished at number five, securing seven wins and 14 points in 14 matches.
In his T20 career, Root has amassed 2,235 runs in 97 matches at an average of over 31, including 14 half-centuries in 87 innings.
